This is a guide, created by Texas Freshwater Fly Fishing, to help you identify different species of Sunfish commonly found in Texas. Specifically, trying to help you identify different members in the Genus Lepomis.
Two Keys to Aid in Sunfish Identification
1) Get a Good, Clear Picture
If possible, get as clear of a picture of the fish as you can. Take several if necessary. Make sure you can clearly view the following in the image:
- Side of the Fish (colors)
- Opercle Flap
- Pectoral Fin
- Dorsal Fin (extended out from body if possible)
- Anal Fin (extended out from body if possible)

2) Know Your Location
Be sure you know what body of water that you caught the fish in. Even within the same river, or river system, the species of sunfish can vary. Take time to learn what species of Sunfish live in the area that you are fishing.
